Chili Cook-off
Saturday, November 7, 2009
4pm 7pm
This fundraiser (the first Saturday of November at the Folger Home in Veterans’ Park on Lake Road in Avon Lake) has been held annually for seven years, with attendance increasing yearly. It’s a great place to gather with friends for a hearty meal while supporting a local historical preservation effort. This year’s event will be held November 7 from 4:00 until 7:00. On July 25, pre-sale tickets for adults and children (3-11) will become available at our Summer Market in Veterans’ Park, as well as from Pat Fellure, 933.6409.
Many restaurants and cafes from the immediate area donate 4-5 gallons of their chili. Other businesses and establishments in the area donate virtually everything else needed to host the event, such as chafing dishes, drinks, ice, desserts, bread and rolls, paper supplies, even floral centerpieces for a raffle. The Press supplies free advertising for the fundraiser and homemade signs announce it throughout the city. Countless volunteers donate their time to pick-up all the donations and also to serve at the event.
Paying attendees receive samples of each chili donated (identified only by a number) and then vote for their
favorite. The vote earns each guest a full bowl of their favorite, a Hot Dog Heaven hot dog, roll, beverage, and
dessert to enjoy within the newly renovated Henry Ford Room in the historic Folger Home at the intersection of
Route 83 and Lake Road.
The following week, the Press prints a letter to the editor, revealing participating restaurants and their corresponding number, as well as the first, second and third place winners. The chili winning the most votes receives a glass shadow box encasing a large spoon, with a plaque commemorating their #1 place position for the year.
Hosting the fundraiser at the Folger Home serves to increase awareness of the rental facility and the restoration goals of the Avon Lake Landmark Preservation Society. We hope you can join us on November 7, 2009.
Enjoy the ambiance, greet new and old friends, and support a worthy cause!
