Mission

The Avon Lake Landmark Preservation Society is a community organization dedicated to the education, preservation, and celebration of historic sights and structures in Avon Lake.

ALLPS history

Avon Lake’s Kirchner sisters Debi Loebich, Diane Scarpelli & Kris Burns along with Connie Field began organizing an effort to save a century building in Avon Lake exactly 100 years after the home was built. They were initally involved in the group which became the Avon Lake Landmark Preservation Society.

The organization’s main project was to preserve and restore Avon Lake’s Folger home built by Thomas Folger in 1902. This was the summer home for the Folgers where they tended grape vines in the area we now know as Blesser Park.

All three Folger sisters, Anna Folger Braman, Josephine Folger Cushing, and Jean Folger Pettibone lived at this home located at 32770 Lake Road. In reviving the memory of these three sisters, the Kirchner sisters made it a true ‘sister act’.

The group formed as a 501c3 non-profit organization with five principal charitable and educational programs:

1. the restoration and preservation program
2. the historical program
3. the visitors program
4. the veterans program
5. the lake museum program

The property is owned by the City of Avon Lake. ALLPS negotiated with the city for a lease in order to restore
and preserve the structure. The initial lease period was for one year, April 1, 2002 to April 1, 2004. For renewal, ALLPS had to meet certain financial criteria in order to renew the two year lease. Our membership drives and 3 annual fundraisers enabled us to meet the criteria. The Ford Motor Company Foundation donated a grant in November 2005, for which the Henry Ford Room was named. In March 2008, the ALLPS secured a 25-year lease with the City of Avon Lake, opening doors to pursue grant and other charitable funding.

The home has been re-roofed, re-painted, and the Henry Ford Room has been renovated for use by community organizations and families for special occasions. Work continues with a revised long range plan anticipated in the near future.
